South-East European Parliamentarians Reaffirm ICPD
Tbilisi, Georgia, 29-31 August 2004

On 29 July 2004, the IEPFPD and the Social and Health Affairs Committee of the Parliament of the Georgian Republic held a sub-regional Parliamentary Roundtable on “Population and Development in South East Europe” in the Georgian Parliament, Tbilisi, Georgia. Over 60 participants from Georgia as well as countries in the region including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Lithuania and Bosnia and Herzegovina discussed at length the main achievements and challenges in living up to the ICPD Programme of Action and the Millennium Development Goals in the region. The participants heard presentations from the Chair of the Social and Health Affairs Committee, The Hon George Tsereteli, as well as the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, UNFPA, the Georgian Minister of Health and the Deputy Minister for Health for Abkhazians in exile. The parliamentarians then spent two days visiting projects of the Georgian Family Planning Association, the UNFPA and visited a camp for Internally Displaced People in Tbilisi. At the conclusion of the Roundtable, the parliamentarians adopted a strong Declaration which reaffirmed the commitment of countries in the region to the ICPD Programme of Action and called on greater attention to IDP/ refugee needs, involving more young people in decision-making processes and legislating in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights.
